What to expect
during your
Itchy Pet Vet consultation...
Your first skin appointment with Dr Kathryn Hamlet, The Itchy Pet Vet, will take between 60-90 minutes, so we can gather all the information needed to get your pet’s skin problems on the right track.
To get a good background before our consultation, please do our online questionnaire about your pet’s skin problems and general health.
We will have reviewed your pet's previous clinical history from your primary care vet(s) and will have some further questions about your pet.
You can expect not to be rushed...
Your pet will receive a full examination, with particular emphasis on skin, paws and ears. In almost all cases we will take some samples from the skin for microscopic examination (cytology). In some cases, other skin tests such as skin scrapings and hair samples may be done also.
These tests will be run during your consultation time and the results will be available immediately and used along with physical exam findings and discussion with you, to formulate an initial treatment plan for your pet.
A full examination
During this first visit we can discuss a diagnostic plan, which may involve special diets, parasite control, or extra testing, such as sending blood or skin samples to an external laboratory. This will allow us to make a diagnosis of the underlying cause of your pet’s skin problem, so we can formulate the optimum management plan for you and your pet.
After all appointments you will receive a personalised diagnostic and treatment plan for your pet by email, so that you can have something to look back on for instructions and discuss with family members.
Your usual vet clinic will also be emailed a copy of the clinical records to ensure that they have up to date information about your pet's treatment.
A personalised plan to beat the itch!
In most instances follow up appointments will be needed to assess response to treatment and adjustments of treatments as needed.
This is a good opportunity for me as a vet to help you, the pet parents, fine tune the management of your pets skin issues.
These follow up appointments are usually 30-45 minutes long depending on the needs of the individual case.
